“My daughter lives in Colorado and I live in Wisconsin. For three weeks she had been suffering from severe abdominal pain. In those three weeks she had been to the ER twice, Urgent Care once and to 2 different specialists and was not getting any better.
My friend is a patient advocate so I called her and asked her to help us. Within 36 hours she received and reviewed my daughter’s medical records and found that on her last visit to the ER her final CT scan showed she had acute appendicitis. She had not been notified about her condition. Within an hour my daughter was back in the ER armed with her records and underwent an emergency appendectomy that saved her life. The surgeon told her that her appendix was just waiting to burst.
The patient advocate handled everything from her office in Wisconsin and kept me informed about my daughter’s condition.” – Barb, Wausau, WI
“I met my patient advocate when she rescued my dog and gave me her card. A year earlier I had been diagnosed with a kidney tumor but was too afraid to do anything about it. I already had Chronic Kidney Disease, high blood pressure and painful gout. I called her and we met and discussed my situation. She reviewed my medical records and a week later we met with a surgeon. Due to my bad kidney function my patient advocate discussed a new procedure with my surgeon which would remove the tumor but leave what was left of my kidney attached. The tumor was cancerous but my kidney function remained the same for a year. My kidneys finally stopped working and she arranged for dialysis, home care, transportation, and was able to get me on the transplant list.
If I had waited any longer the cancer could have spread to my bones or my lungs. I am alive and adjusting to dialysis thanks to my patient advocate. She was with me every step of the way.” Mann, Manakin-Sabot, VA
“One evening I decided to blow the leaves off my roof. It was getting dark and I was in a hurry. I slipped on the leaves and fell off the roof and landed on my blower and my back. I called my girlfriend and she called 911. Since she could not make it to the hospital she called some church friends to have them come help me. My friends arrived about 1am and learned that I had broken my spine in 2 places. They stayed with me and then went to my house to get my belongings. One of them told me she was a patient advocate and I had never heard of that before. At 7am the next morning I was panicking and called and hired the patient advocate.
The hospital was going to let me go home in a neck collar and lower back brace. The patient advocate researched my two breaks and learned that one of them was “the Hangman’s fracture” and that any movement could cause me to be paralyzed from the neck down. She contacted my doctor and they decided I needed more secure bracing for my neck. I was re-x-rayed and fitted for a metal halo. Physical therapy was ordered and they were releasing me to go home. I had no-one at home to take care of me so my patient advocate persuaded the doctor to send me to a rehab facility. She personally interviewed 5 facilities and found the best one for my needs. After 8 days of rehab I was ready to go home but could not fit in anyone’s car. My patient advocate has a minivan and I was able to fit my head and halo into it.
My patient advocate was in the right place at the right time and helped me through emergency care, rehab and home care. I am so grateful for her for everything she did for me.” Duston, Henrico, VA
“I have a 19 year old friend, Danielle, who has been having a lot of physical problems, She does not drive and grew up in foster care. She had just received medical insurance through her employer. She had no medical records and no way to get to her medical appointments. I have a friend who is a patient advocate and I introduced her to Danielle at church. She agreed to be Danielle’s patient advocate.
She set up a meeting with Danielle and discussed her problems and made her feel comfortable. She was able to get all of Danielle’s past medical records and school immunization information. Danielle had not been vaccinated properly and she arranged for her to get up to date. She reviewed Danielle’s current and past medical records and found some inconsistencies. She noted that Danielle had had an enlarged spleen for over a year.
Danielle was in and out of the ER and no one could figure out what was causing all her pain. The patient advocate dug deeper and was able to find Danielle’s birth parents. She interviewed the birth parents and learned about several genetic problems in Danielle’s immediate family members. She learned that it was highly likely that Danielle had inherited a very serious spleen disorder. This was confirmed with further testing and Danielle had to have her spleen removed. Danielle was finally feeling better. She had other genetic testing done and it does not appear that she has any other inherited disorders.
Thanks to her patient advocate, Daniel is finally feeling better and has blossomed. Even though her patient advocate moved to Wisconsin, they have kept in touch and become fast friends” Mildred, Henrico, VA
